Snapshot in LA- Marion Cotillard : what a good i.D!

---
Cotillard walks us through an architectural California villa, nonchalantly and charmingly. She strolls in her Dior heels and then tosses them aside to…surprise the onlooker with her super-powered steps.

Dior S/S 2014: Raf Simons knows how to say it with flowers!

“Against nature: the real and the imagined unite in a new synthesis of colour, codes and conceptions of clothing. There is an idea of experimentation in altering the nature of Dior’s fashion through a celebration of the artificial and the real this season. Here, for Raf Simons, Artistic Director of Christian Dior, the past collides with the future, ultimately forming a new tribe of flower women in a new architecture of clothing for Spring-Summer.”

I just recently discovered the photos of this S/S 2014 Dior extravaganza orchestrated by Raf Simons. Of course, you might already have seen their beauty in many a fashion magazine or blog last winter, still I wanted to share them with you. You might remember Dior’s amazing Autumn/Winter 2012 Runway with florists 'extraordinaires' like the Parisian Eric Chauvin and the Belgian Mark Colle (one of my favourites!). It seems Mr Simons really has a thing with flowers and likes saying it with flowers chez Dior. And I must say, I am obsessed with his floral projects. Enlisting the help of celebrated fashion event designer Bureau Betak once again, a temporary structure was constructed in the centre of Jardin du Musée Rodin. This temporary hanging garden is such a spectacular and dreamy interpretation of an exotic tropical Eden.
Watch the timelapse of the structure coming together in the video below.
Now you might also like to watch the edited version of the fashion show itself.

Abandoned and so Beautiful!

Found on English Russia, photos by Ilya Varmalov
This is an abandoned railway station in Abkhazia, former Russian territory. It has remained  untouched since the collapse of the USSR – the railway connection of Abkhazia and Russia stopped and the railway station was left out of demand so nature could take over the left-overs of Soviet architecture.

Postcard from the Villa Noailles Cubist Garden, Hyeres - France

Cubist garden at Villa Noailles

The modern gardens of Guevrekian and his contemporaries represented a shift from relating the garden to nature to a relation of the garden to human. As Dorothee Imbert says "Designers of these gardens did not attempt to represent a slice of the natural world – neither seeking a Cartesian or Virgillian ideal – but instead displayed a plastic composition of lines and surfaces built with living and inert materials, and framed like a picture." (Imbert 1997 p. 170) The garden became an extension of the house, an architectonic form.

Gabriel Guevrekian's garden for Charles and Marie-Laure de Noailles at Villa Noailles had an imposed space whose triangular shape the clients and Mallet-Stevens viewed as suited to Guevrekian's new design style. Noailles had consulted both Mies van der Rohe and le Corbusier before employing Mallet-Stevens. He wanted artifice in his landscape. The Villa commanded great views of the Côte d’Azur and Noailles wished to contrast this strongly with an enclosed and architectonic ensemble that framed the natural whilst delineating ownership. (Imbert 1997 p. 130-132)

The disregard for the needs of the plants in the Noailles garden and the differing growth rates soon disrupted the balance of the design and prompted Charles de Noailles, himself a famous amateur gardener, to replant the design entirely, not long after its instigation. It was, however, a progression on the Paris garden by its regard for physical occupation.

IDS13

Attended Trade Day at the IDS. It was Lola's first immersion in the world of Design Shows at age 18 months an our little trio had a very good time.
This year what caught my eye, besides the sexy Italian kitchens of Scavolini and the light fixtures by Fontana Arte, was the booth of landscape designers and architects firm Earth Inc. Three very friendly men with a clear vision, not to mention the fact that they love France and The International Garden Festival in Chaumont ...

Acne Paper: my favourite!

I hereby officially declare the Acne Paper the best magazine I have ever read - both regarding content and design, that is.

"Each issue is created around one key idea – a timeless theme that in various ways touches all those working in the creative fields regardless of age, cultural background or social status. In an eclectic yet coherent mix portrait, fashion and art photography as well as interviews, memoirs and prose the editorial narrative aims to unite artistic minds of all generations. It pays tribute to past luminaries whilst still keeping a firm grip on the present, evoking something timeless, something nostalgic yet refreshingly modern." (David Carlson for David Report)

Glenn Gould's Ode to Toronto

(une version française suit la version anglaise)

In case Toronto is still a mystery for you, here is a film directed by Glenn Gould in 1979 that should answer most of your questions. With many a historical reference and a pinch of witty humour, he introduces us to his definition of Toronto.

But enough with my writing about it. I will let you enjoy the visit of the city that I too love with Mr. Gould as your special guide for the day... And what a guide!
-----------------------------

Eclectic sources of Inspiration on a Thursday night!

Photos by Geneviève Caron, represented by Lisa Bonnici, photographer's agent.

Last night, we went on an art cruise. The trip took us first to the Gladstone Hotel where part of the Contact show is currently exhibited. Strangely enough, my attention got caught by the photographic works of two Genevièves... Geneviève Caron and Geneviève Thauvette.

Photos by Geneviève Thauvette

Then while browsing through the Gladstone floors, we got invited for a drink by a friend, artist Bruno Billio, resident of room 209. This stop-over in his room sure crowned our visit to the Gladstone with a certain sense of Sprezzatura. Bruno's interior offers a subtle dialogue between the ultra-modern and the classic, which might well reflect his own personality.

And last but not least, we ended up at the Enter OCAD 2010 show. Simply breathtaking! If you have the occasion this weekend to spend an hour or two in the university’s Faculty of Design, you will sure enjoy the eclectic mix of their graduating students' works- ranging from drawing and painting, printmaking, photography, criticism and curatorial practice, integrated media and sculpture/installation in the Faculty of Art, to advertising, environmental, industrial and graphic design, illustration and material art and design (jewellery, fibre and ceramics).

What a night!

New Index for Atelier Jacob!

Marco Jacob in "Poetics of Structure" by Anna Sulikowska, Slash Magazine (Summer 2007)

Last week, Marco Jacob, my husband, and I, celebrated the launch of his new website!
It took him some time to transfer the data and upload the new material, but the result is really interesting. Instead of updating his old website with the help of a webmaster, he opted for a format that is called Indexhibit. He researched a lot, browsed on many sites that had been built with Indexhibit, and learnt how to master this new tool. Being independent in how to display one's creative work is, I think, of paramount importance for an artist. It therefore was a huge step that this more user-friendly format enabled him to take. He now can go through the regular updates of his multidisciplinary work himself, which is revolutionary.

Marco and I would like to invite you to browse through his new website, so you can see some of the projects he has been working on lately:

Identity design and stationery for Plutino Group. 2009.

Fabrication of maquette for artist Luis Jacob. 2009.
Used in a competition entry for a public art project.

Warp lounge chair. 2008.
Vacuum formed plastic. Prototyped by UB Signs.

Set design for photo shoot featured in Fashion Magazine. 2007.
Photography Miguel Jacob.

Temporary installation initiated by the studio. 2007.

Installation at the Gladstone Hotel's Come Up to My Room exhibition. 2007.
Photography Anna Sulikowska and Chris Curreri.

Louise armchair. 2006.
Baltic birch plywood. Prototyped by Matt Wood.

Hope you enjoyed the visit! Please, leave a comment to let us know your impressions.
We'll take good note of it.
